A stroll around the dividers in Derry~Londonderry uncovers an awe inspiring city packed brimming with history, legacy, interest and a lively social scene. This is the main remaining totally walled city in Ireland and one of the finest samples of Walled Cities in Europe. The Walls were manufactured amid the period 1613-1618 by the decent, the Irish Society as protections for mid seventeenth century pilgrims from England and Scotland. The Walls, which are give or take 1.5km in circuit, frame a walkway around the internal city and give an one of a kind promenade to see the format of the first town which still jelly its Renaissance Style road plan right up ’til today. The four unique entryways to the Walled City are Bishop’s Gate, Ferryquay Gate, Butcher Gate and Shipquay Gate. Three further entryways were included – magazine Gate, Castle Gate and New Gate.
