The Derry Peace Bridge over the River Foyle spans a 400 year old physical and political hole between two sides of an once, sharply isolated group. Composed by Wilkinson Eyre Architects in London and financed to the tune of £14 million by the European Regional Development Fund for Peace it is an extremely great bit of construction modeling.
With two basic arms heading in inverse bearings, symbolizing the unification of both groups from the inverse sides of the Foyle stream, the Protestant Waterside and the Nationalist Bogside, these two contradicted and autonomous arms are presently united in a basic handshake over the waterway.
Opened in 2011 this 235 meter long, 4 meter wide bended trail, track and cycleway extends from the Guild Hall in the downtown area of Derry City to Ebrington Square and St Columb’s Park on the furthest side of the River Foyle.
