A guest to Derry City Cemetery will discover the historical backdrop of Derry~Londonderry surrounding them – actually written in stone. By the center years of the nineteenth century it was clear that the city’s burial grounds, connected to temples, were getting to be stuffed. From 1 January 1867 the memorial parks appended to St. Columb’s Cathedral, St. Augustine’s Church and Long Tower Chapel were shut to new entombments, with “access” confined to those families with rights to graves. The City Cemetery was opened in 1853. It is the property of Derry City Council. Individuals purchasing a grave don’t possess the grave yet just have the privilege to internment in it. The initially reported internment here is that of Robert McClelland, a 10-month-old offspring of Orchard Street, who kicked the bucket 10 December 1853.
